Comète | 6 - Saint-Jean-de-Luz

Audiovisual of the exhibition 'Comète, the escape network', about the clandestine network for the evacuation of fugitives during World War II that operated in Europe between 1941 and 1944. It was dedicated to collecting downed Allied airmen in Nazi-occupied Europe and evacuating them to Gibraltar, after crossing the Basque 'muga' via the Bidasoa or the Pyrenees. It is estimated that Comète managed to take in or repatriate around 800 fugitives and had the collaboration of more than 3,000 civilians, of whom around 700 were arrested and some 290 were shot or died in deportation.

'Comète, the escape network' recounts the experiences of a group of protagonists of this feat, especially women who barely came of age and who managed to put the Gestapo in check. The motivations, the risks, the fear, the uncertainty... allow us to reflect on the role of civil society in situations of war.

'Comète, the escape network' is an audiovisual exhibition that stops at the 8 main stations of the network: London - Brussels - Paris - Bordeaux / Bayonne - Saint Jean de Luz - Bidasoa / Pyrenees - Donostia / San Sebastian and Ravensbrück / Mauthausen.
